Community Programs

The Newfields Police Department firmly believes in the philosophy of community policing.  Community policing can accurately be defined as, “a policing philosophy that promotes and supports organizational strategies to address the causes and reduce the fear of crime and social disorder through problem-solving tactics and community-police partnerships.” (United States Department of Justice) We feel that it’s very important for the police department to be involved with the community, especially with the children and seniors.  Currently, Newfields Police Officers are engaged in a variety of community programs.  Some of these programs include:

• Reading to students at Newfields Elementary 
• D.A.R.E.
• Helpful Hands
• Community Gardening
• Coffee With a Cop
• Fall Festival

The Newfields Police Department engages in a wide variety of community programs.  Two of our major programs are the Helpful Hands program and the Community Garden. The community garden provides vegetables to families in town throughout the summer months.  The Helpful Hands Program, which was formed by the Newfields Police Department years ago aids residents through the charity and generosity of their neighbors and friends.  During the holidays, we provide meals and gifts for children and families.  Throughout the year, we may aid with grocery bills, utility bills and other household financial burdens.  The Helpful Hands program also maintains a running list of people who may need assistance during emergencies or extreme weather events.  During such an incident, a member of the Police Department will make a daily phone call to check on your well-being and to inquire if there are any issues that you may need assistance with.  If we are unable to make phone contact by a certain hour, a member of the Police or Fire Department will drive to your residence to check on your welfare and ensure that you are not in need of any type of assistance.  Reasons for becoming a member of Helpful Hands can vary from:

• Being elderly 
• Living alone
• An individual with special needs or a disability
• A single parent or someone whose partner is routinely away
• A family in need
• Someone who is unsure how to deal with a critical incident
