The Boston Post Cane was given to the Town of Newfields in 1909 by The
Boston Post. The prestigious cane has since then been presented as an
award to the oldest living resident of The town of Newfields. The Boston Post Cane was presented to M. Carolyn Conner at the age of 93. Conner was born on November 18, 1912. She grew up on a farm on what is know Route 152 in Newmarket, New Hampshire. She grew up driving a horse and buggy back in forth into The Town of Newmarket, it was not until the 1940's, that her family got their first automobile. She worked in a shoe shop in Downtown Newmarket until she took a position in the nurses' dinning hall at The Exeter Hospital. It was at that Hospital where she met her future husband, Alfred Conner. The two married on September 12, 1948, in a ceremony held in West Swanzey, New Hampshire; they traveled to West Swanzey due to their local church was without a pastor. After they wed, she took over the job of answering the phones and taking orders for the family owned soda factory, in addition to raising their three children. Carolyn is an accomplished seamstress and has entered 4-H competitions as a youth for dressmaking. While a teenager she won a competition for the State of New Hampshire. She has been to 4-H competitions at The Eastern States Exposition. She has also traveled to Chicago for sewing contests at The International Livestock Show. She continues to enjoy knitting and remains involved in 4-H through the Extension Service. The Town of Newfields would like to thank M. Carolyn Conner for the opportunity of presenting her with this prestigious award. Congratulations Carolyn!
